CAMEROON : A RIGGED MATCH SCANDAL IN THE CAN QUALIFIERS, INVOLVING THE INDOMITABLE LIONS
Cameroonian football is currently going through a tumultuous period, marked by serious rigged match accusations that could tarnish the reputation of the Indomitable Lions. While the national team seems to find a certain balance on the field, as evidenced by its recent 3-1 victory against Libya during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, administrative and organizational problems continue to accumulate around the selection.
Recently, Vincent Aboubakar, an emblematic captain of the Indomitable Lions, had publicly called for appeasement during a press conference, asking leaders of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot) and the Ministry of Sports to end the tensions that disruptthe proper functioning of the team. However, these tensions could well worsen with the revelation of a possible corruption scandal involving a match of the playoffs of the African Cup of Nations (CAN).
According to information relayed by several sources, the Kenyane Football Federation (FKF) launched an investigation concerning the match between Kenya in Cameroon during the CAN qualifiers. The suspicions relate to a possible manipulation of the result, with video evidence which would have captured compromising discussions involving goalkeeper Kenyan Patrick Matasi. The latter would have been filmed in the process of exchanging with individuals about a financial arrangement in exchange for a complacent performance during the meeting.
The match in question, played on October 14, 2024, resulted in a large victory in Cameroon (4-1). Following these revelations, Patrick Matasi was dismissed from the Kenyan selection during the last rally, which strengthens doubts about his involvement in this case.
This case could have major repercussions on Fécafoot and its president, Samuel Eto'o. If the accusations are confirmed, the former legend of Cameroonian football could see his position weakened, even questioned. Already under pressure due to internal conflicts within the federation and recurring criticism on its management, ETO'O could face an unprecedented crisis if its administration is linked to this scandal.
African and international football bodies, including CAF (African Football Confederation) and FIFA, may have to take up the case to conduct in -depth investigations. Sports and disciplinary sanctions could be pronounced if proof of manipulation is established, which would impact not only the players involved, but also the image of Cameroonian football.
This scandal intervenes in a context where the fight against corruption and rigged matches remains a major issue for African football. If the allegations are verified, they may throw additional discredit on the continent's competitions, already sometimes undermined by suspected arranged results. Supporters and observers are now awaiting rapid and transparent clarifications to prevent this controversy from a lasting harm to the credibility of indomitable lions and their institutions.
